5月30日下午,哈佛大学英语系著名文学教授丹尼尔·奥尔布赖特(Daniel Albright)应外国语学院邀请,在仙林外国语学院会议室,为外语专业师生做了题为“格特鲁德•斯泰因作品之音乐性”的精彩讲座。讲座由外国语学院院长王玉括教授主持。
奥尔布赖特教授长期从事现代主义文学研究,特别关注现代主义音乐和绘画等艺术与文学之间的互动,他以美国著名现代主义作家斯泰因的文学创作为例,分析了斯泰因以音乐性去诠释对象,以语言实践透视对象的尝试,并详细介绍了由斯泰因填词,维吉尔·汤姆森谱曲的歌剧脚本《三幕剧中的四个圣徒》。
奥尔布赖特教授才思敏捷、博学多能,与外院师生精彩互动,为重新阅读美国现代主义作品提供了新的思路,令人耳目一新。
主讲嘉宾简介:
Daniel Albright, Ernest Bernbaum Professor at Harvard University, teaches in the Music Department as well as the English Department. He’s particularly interested in the ways in which artistic media--poetry, music, painting--interact with one another; At Harvard he teaches two Core Curriculum courses: the first called Putting Modernism Together, which studies (for example) Impressionism through works by Monet, Debussy, and Joseph Conrad, or Surrealism through works by Apollinaire, Stravinsky, and Magritte; the second is The History of the English Language. He also teaches courses on opera, drama, Victorian and Modernist poetry and fiction, and the relation of physics to literature.
Among his publications, the following books are well known and accepted. Modernism and Music: An Anthology of Sources(2004), Beckett and Aesthetics(2003), Berlioz's Semi-Operas (2001), Untwisting the Serpent (2000) won the Susanne M. Glasscock Humanities Book Prize for Interdisciplinary Scholarship, Quantum Poetics (1997), W. B. Yeats: The Poems, (ed. 1990), Stravinsky: The Music-Box and the Nightingale (1989), Tennyson: The Muses' Tug-of-War (1986), Lyricality in English Literature (1985), Representation and the Imagination: Beckett, Kafka, Nabokov, Schoenberg (1981), and Personality and Impersonality: Lawrence, Woolf, Mann (1978).
